The short answer is that your auto policy will cover a collision or comprehensive loss to a rental car provided you have that coverage on a vehicle on your policy and that vehicle is not being used while you are renting a car. This provision in the auto policy only applies in the United States, its territories and Canada.

The reason this is important is that many rental car agencies can provide collision and comprehensive coverage as part of the rental agreement, for an extra fee. If you have coverage on your own vehicle you do not have to pay for that extra coverage. The rental vehicle is covered because it it considered a “replacement vehicle” for the insureds own car.

Many times if a rental car is out of service due to an accident the rental agency will charge the daily rate lost to the person renting the car until that vehicle is back in service. Those charges are not covered under the “replacement vehicle” provision of the auto policy unless the insured carries a special coverage called rental reimbursement.
